KOSTELEC PROGRAM

Wednesday

Everyone is a beginner - technique

Back to the basics. In this workshop we look at the basics of how to hold the instrument to how to align the body to use it most efficiently. These basic concepts are often the change that intermediate players need to get to that next level. learn to be mindful and aware in your playing and make more music.

Thursday - Rhythm Day

Finding the Groove

Learn how to figure out rhythmic patterns and how to apply them to ukulele building from the ground up. Starting off with a firm foundational strum is the first goal while adding new techniques throughout. We'll tackle how to identify rhythms and the most logical ways to play them on the instrument for efficiency of playing. Never ask for the strumming pattern again and learn some new right hand techniques along the way. While we will work on some more advanced rhythmic concepts this workshop is accessible for anyone that can play three chords and do a basic down and up strum. Building up from the basics we'll go through three songs and figure out together how to make the groove.

Rhythm is Maths

Don't have rhythm? Don't worry! Sammy breaks down the components of how subdivisions work within music, and how even the most complex of rhythms is nothing more than the ability to count to 4. You'll get to learn the terminology of rhythmic notation, as well how patterns and strumming are made so you can make your own!

Friday -Improvisation Day

Scales can sing

Scales aren't just weird finger exercises that we need to know - they are actually the backbone to melody and harmony! In this workshop Sammy will make you look at scales in a completely different way on your ukulele, so that you learn how to use them for melody playing, soloing and how to create your scales from scratch.

Melody Matters / Chord Melody Solos

Take a solo! It's not as hard as you think. In this workshop we look at how to solo over a song without the use of scales. We'll begin by using melodic fragments of songs to create a solo over 'Singin' in the Rain' and then move on to how to use two chord shapes to build a chord melody solo over the form.

Saturday - Chord Day

Chords are LEGO

Bringing Danish values to the ukulele, Sammy will break down and explain how you can create hundreds of variations of chords you use without learning one single fancy name or needing a music degree. We will take our scale concept from the last workshop and apply it to chords - snapping the two together like lego pieces is all it takes for you to change the way you look at new chords.

Let's Get Diminished

In this workshop we learn all of the chords. Really, all of them, but more importantly, how they work. Learn how understanding one key shape on the ukulele can unlock and understanding of how moveable chords are built up and down the neck.
